Amsterdam Pride Canal Cruise — Watching the Parade by Boat

Amsterdam Pride's Canal Parade is a unique event in the world — a full-scale pride parade conducted entirely on decorated boats through the city's canal ring. Watching from a boat moored on the canal, or being on the water yourself, is the best way to experience it. The parade typically takes place on the first Saturday of August, with around 80 elaborately decorated boats carrying DJs, performers, and tens of thousands of revellers past hundreds of thousands of spectators on the canal banks.

How to Experience Amsterdam Pride from the Water

There are two ways to be on the water for Amsterdam Pride: on a private chartered boat that moors on the parade route, or on one of the parade boats themselves (these require working with LGBTQ+ organisations or sponsors months in advance).

For most visitors, a private charter moored on the Prinsengracht or Keizersgracht gives the best view of the parade boats as they pass. You get a prime position on the water, drinks on board, and a 2–3 hour floating viewing party. This is a very different experience from standing on a bridge — you are at the same level as the parade boats, which creates an extraordinary atmosphere.

Booking a Pride Boat in Amsterdam

Pride boats for the Canal Parade need to be booked 4–6 months in advance. The parade weekend (late July to early August) is one of the busiest periods in Amsterdam's canal calendar and private boats are claimed early by locals as well as visitors.

When booking, ask the operator specifically about mooring on the parade route — not all operators can secure parade-route positions, and the difference between a good view and a side canal position is significant. Book a boat that includes drinks, as the parade lasts 2–3 hours.

Amsterdam Pride runs for about 10 days across late July and early August, with events, parties, and exhibitions across the city. The Canal Parade on Saturday is the centrepiece, but evening cruises earlier in Pride Week are also popular — quieter and more intimate, with the city in a celebratory mood.

For the Canal Parade specifically, the Prinsengracht between Westermarkt and Leidseplein is the prime stretch — plan your mooring position here if possible.
