What to Wear on an Amsterdam Canal Cruise
What you wear on an Amsterdam canal cruise depends on the season, the time of day, and whether your boat is open or covered. The most important rule: always bring a layer, even in summer. The water creates a breeze and the temperature on the canal is noticeably cooler than on land, even on a warm day. This guide covers what to wear in each season and gives practical advice on footwear, bags, and what to leave behind.
Spring (March–May): Layers Are Essential
Spring in Amsterdam is beautiful but unpredictable. Temperatures range from 8°C to 18°C, and a sunny morning can turn breezy by afternoon. On an open-top boat, even a 15°C day feels cool with wind. Wear: a base layer, a mid-layer (fleece or cardigan), and a light waterproof outer layer. Jeans and comfortable trainers work well. Bring a scarf — it makes a big difference on a breezy afternoon canal.
For King's Day in late April, wear orange — it is a strong cultural expectation and wearing it makes you feel part of the event.
Summer (June–August): Light but Plan for Breeze
Summer days in Amsterdam can reach 25–30°C, but on an open-top boat you will always feel cooler due to the movement of the boat and canal breeze. Wear light, comfortable clothing — linen or cotton — and always bring a thin jacket or cardigan for the return journey when the sun lowers.
Sunglasses and sunscreen are important on open boats — the water reflects UV and you can burn faster than you expect. A hat helps on long afternoon cruises. Flat shoes with grip are safer than sandals when boarding, as docks can be wet and uneven.
Autumn (September–October): Same as Spring
Autumn weather in Amsterdam mirrors spring — mild, variable, and often cloudy. September can still be warm enough for a light jacket; October requires a proper coat. The formula is the same as spring: layers. A waterproof outer layer is useful as Amsterdam averages 12–15 rainy days per month in October.
The canal-side leaves turn amber in October, making it a beautiful season for photography. Wear comfortable walking shoes as you may walk to and from the dock.
