Amsterdam Light Festival: Walking Route vs Boat Cruise Comparison
Should you walk the 6.5 km route in winter or view light sculptures from a heated canal boat?
The Amsterdam Light Festival covers approximately 6.5 kilometres across the Herengracht, Oosterdok, and the Amstel River. Walking gives you flexible time at land-adjacent installations for free, but takes 2.5 to 3.5 hours in freezing winter temperatures. A canal cruise costs €15–€55 per person depending on the boat and views the water-based artworks directly from heated, covered boats with panoramic glass roofs or open heated sloops, offering the exact perspective the artists designed for.
Which Festival Boats Are Actually Heated, and Which Are Open
This is the decision that matters most in January, and "heated" is used loosely enough in listings that it is worth being specific. Across the 17 boats sailing the festival route this season: 12 have onboard heating, 16 have a cover or canopy that goes up when the weather turns, 7 run as open boats, and 7 have a restroom on board. Six serve glühwein or mulled wine.
Those numbers do not add up to 17 because several boats are both: a convertible sloop with a canopy that closes counts as open and covered, which is usually the most flexible choice on an unpredictable January evening.
