Open Boat vs Covered Boat Amsterdam — Which Should You Choose?

Open-top electric sloops are the most photogenic way to experience Amsterdam's canals. You are low on the water with 360-degree views, no glass between you and the canal houses, and the freedom to lean out and photograph the bridges as you pass beneath them. The electric motor means they are nearly silent — you hear the city, the water, and the captain's voice clearly.

The trade-off is weather exposure. Open boats are ideal from May to September when temperatures are above 15°C. In April and October they are manageable with layers. From November to March, they require serious warm clothing and are not comfortable for most people.

Covered saloon boats have glass sides and roofs — you see the city clearly but you are sheltered from rain and wind. They typically have heating and seating for 8–20 people. Some have an open rear deck as well, giving you the best of both worlds.

For families with young children, groups in autumn or winter, and anyone who prioritises comfort over photography, a covered boat is the right choice. The glass provides excellent views on a sunny day, and on a rainy day they feel warm and cosy rather than miserable.
